Few could have imagined the constellation of events that would unfold following the Russian invasion of Ukraine—a stunning show of grit and resilience on the part of the Ukraine military and civilian populations, the burgeoning refugee crisis, a significant ramp-up in Germany’s defense spending, the movement towards NATO by Sweden and Finland, and a more unified response from the international community than many expected. What motivated President Putin to act when he did and what might we anticipate in the coming weeks and months from the major players in this scenario?
