Our virtual book club is open to all!  Its theme in 2021 is The Traveler’s World and features books on travel or adventure narratives. We’re lucky to have Beth Ahlstrom, a former World Affairs Council Tacoma board member and seasoned international traveler, as our host.

Our March book club selection is The Art of Travel by Alain de Botton. Few things are as exciting as the idea of travelling somewhere else. But the reality of travel seldom matches our daydreams—and the reasons behind such disappointments are rarely explored. The Art of Travel is a philosophical look at the ubiquitous but peculiar activity of travelling ‘for pleasure’, with thoughts on airports, landscapes, museums, holiday romances, photographs, exotic carpets and the contents of hotel mini-bars. The perfect antidote to those guides that tell us what to do when we get there, The Art of Travel tries to explain why we really went in the first place - and helpfully suggests how we might be happier on our journeys.

Members have had luck ordering from these less expensive vendors: thriftbooks.com and betterworldbooks.com.

PLEASE NOTE: The link to the Zoom meeting for this event is in a confirmation email you will receive upon RSVPing. Please make sure to check your email inbox for this confirmation - including your spam folders! Your confirmation email will come from administrator@wactacoma.com - Thanks!
