Our virtual book club is open to all!  Its theme until 2021 is The Traveler’s World and features books on travel or adventure narratives. We’re lucky to have Beth Ahlstrom, a former World Affairs Council Tacoma board member and seasoned international traveler, as our host.

Our December selection is The Sun Also Rises, by Ernest Hemingway.

The novel is Hemingway’s first, written in 1926, and “is now regarded as Hemingway’s greatest work,” according to Hemingway biographer Jeffrey Meyers. It portrays American and British expatriates who travel from Paris to Pamplona to watch the running of the bulls. The characters are based on real people in Hemingway's circle, and the action is based on real events. Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read, it helped to establish Hemingway as one of the greatest writers of the 20th century.

Please note the date—December 17. Typically book club meets on the last Thursday of the month. Since that date falls on New Year’s Eve, and the week prior is Christmas Eve, we decided to move the date up.  But take heart—the book is widely available and short!

Members have had luck ordering from these less expensive vendors: thriftbooks.com and betterworldbooks.com. You can also download the full text as an ebook through The Internet Archive.
