This presentation will discuss recent developments in Syria with respect to changes on the ground and the shifting alliance matrix. Professor Etga Ugur will first cover the evolution of the Syrian conflict over the course of nine years and then offer an analysis of regional and international factors that made the survival of the Assad regime possible. It will conclude by a discussion of future prospects and the key issues that will be at stake going forward. Etga Ugur is an Associate Professor at the University of Washington, Tacoma. He teaches classes on Comparative Politics, American Foreign Policy, and Middle East Politics. He is the author of Faith and Politics in the Public Sphere: The Gülen Movement and the Mormon Church (Syracuse University Press, 2019).
